CROATIAN LONG DISTANCE TRAIL (CLDT)

Croatia’s national scenic hiking trail

Croatian Long Distance Trail (CLDT) is a national scenic long distance hiking trail that connects the easternmost, northernmost, westernmost and southernmost points of Croatia. It is the result of work of the CLDT Association (CLDTA), which was founded out of a desire to make the first such trail in Croatia, modelled by the world’s long distance hiking trails.

The trail length is approximately 2,200 kilometres (1,400 miles) with around 65.6 km (215,223 ft / 40.76 mi) of positive elevation gain. The CLDT consists of 3 sections (A, B & C) and is intended to be hiked in one single push through its entire length (end to end, thru-hike Croatia).

Section A: Ilok (east) – Sveti Martin na Muri (about 576 km)

Section B: Sveti Martin na Muri (north) – Savudrija (about 565.5 km)

Section C: Savudrija (west) – Prevlaka (south) (about 967.5 km)

My CLDT adventure will take me through all types of terrains: maintained mountain trails; wild trails; hard rock terrains of Dalmatia; forest paths; gravel roads and sometimes asphalt roads (on some sections of the trail there were no other options).

After walking the full length of New Zealand three and a half years ago, riding a bicycle around the state of Tasmania last year and then earlier this year riding a bicycle along Australian’s longest rail trails all to raise awareness and donations for nystagmus. Starting around mid-May 2024, I will be walking all through Croatia for the same cause.

As an estimate, the walk usually takes around 100 days to complete, but due to visa restrictions, I will have less than 90 days to complete it. So in typical Mikey Sheen fashion, if I am pushed for time, I may have to find other means of physical transport to help me meet my deadline. Or, if I just need to mix it up a bit. But it will always be some form of physical transport.

And I will be keeping you updated along the way as I journey my way around Croatia’s stunning Long Distance Trail.
